I'll teach my boy 100 words

So we took Preston to his 18 month well visit in the beginning of Jan. The doctor asks us what words Preston is using. I could only come up with 5 (Mom, Dad, kitty, no, hello). My doctor is so nice he would never come out and say your kid is dumb or slow. He said ok he is coming around. They are supposed be using about 10. He said the goal would be for Preston to be using 20 by his 2nd birthday. If he is not too that point, then he may suggest speech therapy. Up until this point (18 months) Preston had showed little interest in reading books either.

I come home and decide to try to introduce short lift the tab books or touch and feel books to Preston and encouraging him to speak. Well he has literally taken off. Here is a list of words that Preston can use at 20 months. (March 1)

1. Mom
2. Dad
3. Kitty
4. Dog
5. Woof
6. Quack
7. Mine
8. No
9. Hello
10. Pee
11. Nose
12. Cheerio
13. Cracker
14. Baby (he thinks that is his name)
15. More
16. Shoe
17. Ball
18. Snap

This is what is coming to my mind. He will also bring books from the shelf to you. He points to what he wants if he can't say it. And is starting to understand things like diaper change. This is always followed by "no" and running in the opposite direction. Another one is when Parker takes a toy he shouts "mine". Oh and when he wants to say "yes" he will get this sweet look on his face. His eyes light up and he shakes his head up and down. So precious.

Jim and I were worried about him because he didn't take to books like his brother had. At this age Parker was already sitting still for books like the Cat in the Hat. I think we are making progress.

A kitty tale

Last week I took Stanley to the vet. I suspected he had an infection and so we needed to get this checked out. I decided to put him on a leash instead of in the carrier.

The vet's office requires that animals be contained somehow. Some kitties will walk on leash, but we haven't attained that skill yet. I used the leash for convenience. It is easier to carry the cat by himself than it is the balance the carrier with Preston who weighs about 28 pounds.

The carrier offers some comfort to the cat as he is shielded a little bit from the environment. So I am trying to keep the boys occupied and keep Stanley calm. they call us in and I hand Stanley to the technician and go back to get the boys. Well Stanley immediately starts freaking out. He hisses and gets all fluffy. The technician envisioning a mean kitty and too scared boys whisked poor Stanley off to the back (where they can keep animals after surgery or to observe).

I explain Stanley's symptoms (this is embarrassing for him, involving his boy parts). I explain what to look for and that usually they just send us home with an antibiotic. Well poor Stanley was not coorporating. Everytime someone would come near him he would hiss and carry on. They wanted me to leave him to see if they could get a urine sample and to give him an exam.

I left him and they gave him a sedative so that they were able to examine him. THey called me a little later and said that I could bring him home if I wanted to try to collect a sample. Being the economical person that I am and my DH always complains how much the cat costs, I brought him home. THey had to bring him out with leather gloves and towel he was so upset and growling. Once he heard my voice he calmed down. He was quarentined to the bathroom with a litter box with styrofoam peanuts so that I could collect a sample. The concern was that he may be blocked or it might hurt to pee.

Fast forward 24 hours. Stanley still has not peed in the styrofoam litter box. I call the vet. they offer to look at him so to see if they can detect anything. I take the carrier this time. Stanley sees the technician and immediately starts growling. They aren't any more successful this time. Everytime they tried to examine him he got mad. so they sent him home with a bladder relaxer and an antibiotic. If he doen'st pee by Sat, he will need to be hospitalized. They have decided to forgo the sample.

We come home and with in the hour he pees in the normal litter box. so he was just being picky about what he peed in. Glad there is no blockage. I decide not to give the bladder relaxer.

Which brings us to the subject of giving pills. Stanley doesn't like to take pills. They make these pill pockets that have pocket you can put a pill in. The idea is the animal will eat the treat with the medicine inside. Well he gets Dramine when we travel and he figured out those pill pockets, so I wrap him in a towel and wear a leather glove to admister his medicine. The meer sight of the pill pusher is enough to make him start gagging. Poor cat.

I think Stanley is on the mend. We only have a week left of pill giving. He doesn't seem to be licking the area so much so hopefully he is getting feeling better. He has to stay indoors so that I can make sure the output is normal. He doesn't like this and will sometimes make this loud meowing/growling noise stating his dislike for being stuck indoors.

Tooting my own horn

Most of you know that I have a Pampered Chef business on the side. I got into this because I love to cook and when I went to a show I wanted everything in the catalog. It is a lot of fun for me. It gets me out of the house a few times a month to socialize and eat good food. I also get a little recognition each month for my efforts. I am holding $5 stars. 1 was my Christmas gift from my director, 1 was Jim's gift and 1 was a bonus for going the extra mile in 2008 with my business.

It was asked what I did the money? I took a picture and then unfolded my stars and put in the bank. I had a dinner bill of $55 to put it towards.

Read me a story

I try to read to my boys every day. Yesterday as I was reading to Parker, my voice started to go as I have a cold right now. I said to Parker, "Why don't you read to Mommy". I was expecting him to tell me the general story or tell me about the pictures. My little boy who is 3 1/2 recited most of the story to me. I couldn't believe my ears. I would point to a word and ask him if he knew what word it was and he had no clue. So he has memorized the books. Amazing to me. Even the books from the library that have only been read a handful of times he knew. Wow.

I wonder how much he has picked up from TV or music in the background. I now really believe that their little minds are sponges absorbing everything around them.

This is one of the books he "read" to me.

A Day in the snow

I like to post pictures with my blog articles and you know how you take the pictures and then it takes awhile to get them off your camera and actually do anything with them. It hasn't snowed anytime recently, but a few weeks ago we had some snow.

The night before the big storm I headed into Wal-mart to buy another snow shovel. Parker likes to help. We got another full size so that it actually does something. I also picked up a sled.

Dad took both boys sled riding. This is the way to go sled riding.
Although sometimes you needed to hold on real tight.

They went several times during the day. Parker would get cold and come inside and then ask to go back out. Here are some night pictures. We discovered our back yard has the perfect hill for a 3 year old to go sled riding on.

Tin foil

I am amazed at things my boys chose to play with. This is what I have to use to cover my leftovers with. Nice huh?

Jim salvaged if for me. Nothing is safe anymore.

Our little brushers

My boys love to brush their teeth. This is kind of a new thing and it is a good thing. Tonight they were brushing their teeth and it was time for bed and they wanted to keep brushing and brushing and brushing. It certainly is a good habit to get into at an early age.

Parker went to the Dentist with me a few weeks ago. The boys are my side kicks and go many places with me. Parker has been going to Dentist with me since he was born. I always took him to cleanings and in a pinch he has even accompanied me to a cavity appointment. My Dentist's office is really good about that.

This past trip, the idea was for Parker to sit in the chair and get his teeth looked at by the hygienist. We decided ahead of time that we could go to Wendy's after wards if he sat in the chair and let Brenda (the hygienist) look in his mouth. Brenda let him pick out at least 20 prizes before he got started. She supplied him and Preston with 4 new toothbrushes and Sponge Bob toothpaste. After a little prodding and turning on the TV, he sat in my lap and let Brenda look at his teeth. The Dentist came in and said "looks good." I was very relieved.

The boys have already managed to lose one set of tooth brushes. We broke out the new ones tonight. Dad gave them a little talk about how the tooth brushes need to stay in the bathroom at all times. Hopefully these last longer than 2 weeks. Yep, they got so involved brushing that they walked into another room with tooth brush in hand and now we can't find them any where.
